A while ago I was in the mega Marion shopping complex with my family (they needed some retail therapy......)

My family, well the female members of my family at least, had gone off to look at clothes and shoes and bonnets…I was feeling rather lost in the vast confusion that is Marion and decided that a coffee was what I needed. As I followed my nose to the delicious smells of caffeine and toasted fruit loaf I came across one of those non permanent boothy things with lots of pictures of very cute Labradors.

I had to stop; I always do at these types of animal things, much to my families amusement as they think I should get my fill of furry ones while I’m at work. Anyway, I discovered it was the Guide Dogs Association of South Australia looking for sponsors for their new litter of puppies that were about to start training. I simply couldn’t resist the feel good buzz of sponsoring a puppy and I knew that I’d get loads of brownie points not only from all the nurses at work but also from my daughter (who by the way spends about 40% of her monthly pocket money sponsoring an orangutan through WWF........I digress). As I was saying I got a buzz just thinking about how worthwhile this sponsorship would be.

So I chatted to the nice lady and as you all probably know I am pretty good at chatting. I signed up to sponsor an E litter puppy. It is great getting updates and finding out about the specific training that goes on. I guess we can all imagine the training that is involved in crossing the road and getting on buses etc but I’d never thought about ‘Food distraction training’ which sounds pretty hard to me as most labs I know would find it very hard to resist the delicious things on offer at places such as Baker’s Delight. Also, all the little things, like exiting the car and navigating a shopping centre like Marion.

All the staff at work love getting updates on the puppies, and who knows what I’ll sponsor next when these puppies have done their training and are fully fledged guide dogs. This sponsorship is very fulfilling for me personally, as when the guide dogs are

fully trained they will be dedicated to helping someone lead a better life. It feels good to be a part of that.

Cheers til next time
