2013 marks the beginning of the final year of veterinary school for the first group of South Australian vet students. With 5 years of study already under my belt, I can hardly believe how quickly the time has passed. The road so far has been challenging, eye-opening, exciting and somewhat tiring, not least attributed by being the ‘guinea pigs’ of a new school. The University of Adelaide vet school, based at the old Roseworthy Agricultural College, joins 6 other veterinary schools in Australia.

Over the past 3 weeks I have been completing my last round of external placement at the Vets First – Strathalbyn Veterinary Clinic. This is my 4th time with Vets First (third outing at Strath) and it has proved to be another fun time. Whether it be pregnancy testing cattle in 36°C heat, or cuddling British Shorthair kittens at the clinic, mixed-animal practice never ceases to keep you on your toes.

A veterinary degree is an amazing course with an incredibly diverse range of skills. Upon graduation we are qualified as all species general practitioners – from budgies with sore beaks to horses with cut legs and everything in-between. Placement provides the opportunities for us students to see all of these aspects of the veterinary lifestyle and helps shape who we will be, and where we would like to end up.

Strathalbyn Veterinary Clinic is a pleasure to work at, especially after growing up in the Ashbourne area, with many family and friends still in the district. The team have been very welcoming and I would like to thank all of you clients who have allowed me the opportunity to make myself the best vet I can be by taking care of your animals.

The coming year holds many exciting, and intimidating, opportunities including my first trip overseas. Hopefully I am able to lend a hand at the clinic in the future and keep in touch with everyone.

James Meyer
