OK so I am heavily biased being a vet myself but if I was sick I would much rather be treated by a good vet than a doctor.  Now don’t get me wrong I have the utmost respect for doctors but in many ways the service in the veterinary industry is far superior.

Why am I even talking about this?  Well recently a family member was diagnosed with a form of skin cancer.  Nothing major but obviously concerning for all involved.  The next step in the diagnosis and treatment was an endoscope procedure that was scheduled for 6 weeks later!!

This got me thinking.....there are perfectly valid reasons for the delay such as doctor’s busy schedules, Medicare and Insurance to sort out, staff and bed shortages etc etc.  I also realise that 6 weeks is actually a pretty good turnaround in the human world.

The same week we were presented with a dog that was a little off colour and had a slightly bloated belly.  Within 24 hours we had performed a full spectrum of blood testing and done an abdominal ultrasound to diagnose a large tumour that had grown on the patient’s spleen.  The following day we had performed an exploratory laparotomy and removed the spleen along with it’s large mass.  3 days later we had a pathologist’s diagnosis (telling us exactly the type of tumour it was) and the patient was given the all clear.  In fact, she had recovered so well she was running around like a puppy again.

The reality is that in veterinary practice we have the luxury of being able to treat cases from start to finish without having to jump through the hoops and fill out reams of paperwork that our human counterparts are subject to.  The end result, in my opinion, is in many ways a far superior service.

Like I said, doctors do a wonderful job but if I was to fall sick or be diagnosed with a serious illness, I’d much rather be a dog or cat!
