To the disappointment of many, it is not possible to take our pets with us all of the time so it is best start expecting that your puppy or kitten gets used to being left home alone early on.

You want to create a sense of security for your pet and the best way to do this is to create a routine when you leave so your pet understands you are leaving and that you will be back.

Start using a phrase that you say to your pet when you leave, try to create a happy mood and don’t act like your leaving is a big deal. Give your pet a pat and leave happy. Repeat this process when you return but avoid making a huge fuss over your pet otherwise he will start to anticipate your arrival, adding to anxiety.

It is a good idea to provide a blanket and a comfortable place where your pet can retire when he wants to sleep.

Pets are likely to feel a little nervous while you are out and chewing is a way of relieving anxiety. Ensure that you provide his favorite chew toy to avoid chewed clothes and shoes. A chew toy can also help prevent boredom and destructive behaviour. There are some excellent treat toys available to provide hours of fun. See Safe Toys For Your Pet for more information.

Make sure your puppy or kitten has a spot he can use to toilet, as you can’t expect him to hang on while you are out.

Finally, try leaving the radio or television on for some company.
